Harry did some funny things and had some quirks, but was an amazing man who I believe people can learn a lot from. He was a gentle, kind, self-educated craftsman and truly a jack-of-all trades. He was very soft hearted, fed the stray cats in his neighborhood and had as many as six inside at one time. Since his cats were such good friends of his, there are tales about them in the book as well. He wouldn’t have wanted me to leave them out so I included them.

Many people can relate. If something broke, he would save it because he planned to fix it. For example, Dad was very excited about getting a new microwave and so proud of himself for researching it out and getting exactly the right one. The next day, my husband (Gerard) and I took groceries to dad and got him to move the old microwave off the counter at least. I thought maybe he’d let Gerard put it by the front door so it would be easy to take out when “the weather broke.” But no, he told us to leave it in the dining room for now. I told Gerard “I’m not saying anymore about it, but you watch, he won’t throw it away.” I was right, he never did!

Harry exemplified the man described in Micah 6:8: “He hath shewed thee, O man what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” (KJV) My dad was a very quiet and private person but always was willing to quietly help people any way he could, especially me. That’s why it is so ironic that I am sharing him with you through this book.

When he hit “old age” he always had to be warm. He wore a jacket vest inside the house all winter long even though the thermometers registered close to 80 degrees. (Yes, plural, because he had at least one hanging in each room, many of which were still in the plastic). Although Harry had many health problems such as diabetes, trouble hearing, poor eyesight, missing teeth, and arthritis, he never complained.

As you read this book, you will get to know my funny dad through my eyes as well as how our relationship grew. If you are a caregiver to an older person, I’m sure you will identify with many of the events I share in this book and realize other people have some of the same problems as you so won't feel so alone. Hopefully, you will even learn some things and get some ideas from him just like I have.

The driver escaped with a very light sentence and Andrew’s brooding sets him thinking about several other examples of killers who have evaded punishment thanks largely to the efforts of a skilled local lawyer. He speculates on what he can do, then begins to put his imaginings into practice. Some local villains begin to disappear and one dies a particularly painful death.

Simultaneously, Rhona Kirk, the victim of a rape, leaves home and sets up as an escort in Dundee. The discovery of the bodies of her rapist and someone who gave her a lift south makes DCI Jack Carston’s job even more difficult.

As he works on both cases, his mostly unspoken sympathies are with whoever is responsible for the disappearances of the villains. Secretly, he too resents the fact that they were allowed to go free and yet he must suppress his instincts and work to find them and whoever is responsible for their death and/or disappearance.

Davidson continues his daily work as a GP, aware himself of the contrast between his role as a healer and the baser thoughts he has about avenging his brother. But his regular contact with so many innocent sufferers who accept their degeneration with stoicism and dignity increases his hatred of those who think nothing of killing and maiming others. He falls more deeply into his despair and his thoughts of vigilantism.

For a long time I had toyed with the idea of a vampire novel that would focus on the vampire's immortality and not the thirst for blood. I am a peculiar man to write a vampire novel; I get faint if I have blood taken sitting up, and am generally phobic about the stuff. I recoil at the thought of someone biting me in the neck. But I have dealt with worse things. I spent a long time studying actual multiple murderers -- I had reason for my interest as my life had crossed paths with no less than three of them. After studying Erszebet Báthory, Gilles de Rais, Bittaker & Norris, and Robert Berdella, vampires were easy.

For a long time, I has also wanted to write a realistic portrayal of prostitution. From Hollywood films, you would think being a hooker is a lark. Films like Pretty Woman give a brief nod toward reality by mentioning murders of prostitutes and showing a client slapping the heroine around in one scene, but it still made copulating with strangers for cash look like a life choice, and one that could land you a really rich, considerate husband. Portraying it as what it most often is -- a miserable form of slavery -- is not often done in American TV, movies, or novels. I know there are exceptions. But not many.

The two came together perfectly with my portrayal of Ella. At first I didn't have a clear idea of my little blonde protagonist, save that she was an abused prostitute who became a vampire and used her new powers to remake her life. But Ella took over the book as I wrote it and let me know what she wanted me to say about her. "The tale grew in the telling," as Tolkien put it.

If you've read my bio--available at web sites that have published my on-line short stories--or my web site, you know I'm a born-again Christian, a fact that puts off many spec-fic readers. Some secularists are alarmed at my embrace of what they see as rank superstition; some Christians are appalled at the gritty realism of my writing style, and my tolerance for gay folk. Like many of my tales, Ella has a Christian message. If that puts you off, you might also want to avoid A Wrinkle in Time, A Canticle for Leibowitz, the Chronicles of Narnia, and for that matter, George MacDonald's Lilith and Bram Stoker's Dracula (Stoker was an agonized sinner who never reconciled his taste for prostitutes with his devout Roman Catholicism). I try not to preach in my stories; I got plenty of that from H.G. Wells and Robert Heinlein and am as wary as anyone else of an author with an agenda. But the message is there.

I would like to thank Emma Wayne Porter for taking a chance on Ella the Vampire, and forcing me to cut its excessive wordage; to Pam Skochinski for editing it and making me cut it down further; and to Frank and Renee Porter for publishing it. The informative part was showing mothers, fathers, babysitters, and anyone who has charge of young children, how, in three seperate instances, kids were being kidnapped. This was done to show these people what to avoid, to prevent this from happening in their lives.
